We have been using dairy free milk for a few years now but sometimes struggle to find it in local shops and it can cost as much as £1.80/litre. we decided to try making our own and finally came up with this recipe which works perfectly for us. It costs very little and there are no heavy bags to carry back from the shops. If you normally use dairy milk, you will initially notice the difference, but we soon got used to it and now don’t use anything else.
Ingredients
1 part oats
1/2 part cashew nuts or almonds
5 parts cold water.
A nut milk bag or muslin to strain.
Method
Simply add all the ingredients to a blender and blend for 30 seconds until smooth. Strain and squeeze as much liquid as possibly through the muslin. We add the residue oats to our home made bread so nothing is wasted.
At this stage if you prefer a creamier milk you can add a tiny amount of cream or vegan cream substitute but it is lovely just as it is.
It can be stored in the fridge but will settle out a little and need stirring before use.
